Neutrino oscillations in media: noise and dissipative effects

By Roberto Floreanini, INFN - Sezione di Trieste

When neutrinos propagate in matter, dissipative phenomena that go beyond the standard MSW effect in general occur: they can be analyzed using techniques developed in the treatment of open quantum systems. These new, non-standard effects can alter in a specific way the pattern of flavor oscillations, in particular for astrophysical and cosmological neutrinos.
