The Standard Model results from a scheme to protect the mass of the scalar bosons
By Max Chaves, Universidad de Costa Rica
The masses of phenomenological scalar bosons are not protected against large contributions due to quantum loops involving the large energy sector of the theory. Here I present a method of protecting their masses based on a generalization of Yang-Mills theories. It is remarkable that the Standard Model obtains immediately upon choosing the appropriate Lie group and allowing for a scalar field and a vector field to possess large vacuum expectation values. It is shown that in the latter case Lorentz invariance is only weakly broken.
